Magnolia virginiana

Overview

The only Magnolia resistant to wet soils. Elegant tree with a wide columnar shape. Green leaves with whitish green undersides. Blooming from June through September with creamy white, upright flowers. Slight pleasant fragrance (lemon). M. virginiana is evergreen in its original habitat, yet semi-evergreen in colder regions. Tolerates full sun provided the soil is moist. Native to North America. Naturally occurs alongside banks of streams and in swamps (acidic pH). Suitable for coastal areas. Does not tolerate heavy soil.
