Overview

M. macrophylla bears the largest single leaf (25-80 cm long) and the largest single flower of all plants native to North America. Fast growing medium-sized deciduous tree (15-20 m high). Short lived in cultivation. Dark green leaves. Branches bend under the weight of heavy foliage. Indigenous to southeastern North America, usually as an understory tree. Endangered species, found only along the bluffs and ravines adjacent to the Apalachicola River in Florida. Broadly columnar canopy. Requires rich soil with plenty of water, protected from strong winds. Poor seed set and seed viability. M. macrophylla is divided into 3 subspecies: ssp macrophylla, ssp ashei and ssp dealbata.
