Projects (see: Vanda, pepper) illustrate:
– my deep understanding of plant production systems
I understand the links in the plant production chain from: from biodiversity to plant breeding, plant propagation, crop cultivation, post harvest technology.
– my multidisciplinary skills, and their practical value, especially when charting new territory
I can view a problem from multiple angles: plant physiology, plant biodiversity & genetics, plant taxonomy, plant environment, plant technology. I understand their intricate interactions, as I have hands-on, lifetime experience with numerous plants.
Each knowledge domain can have different causes, with different solutions.
I take into account not only the aboveground part of a plant, but also take into account the underground part (which is often neglected by others).
– I’m able to apply my knowledge and experience gained from one plant to another crop
Example: An orchid and bamboo are totally different plants, but physiologically they both belong to the group of monocots, and share some characteristics in plant growth & development.
– I integrate insights from other people’s experiences
Example: Young plants can have adaptation problems when moved to another location, as the root system needs to form modified roots, better adapted to the new (underground) growing conditions.
My parents ran a nursery of cucumber plants. From their experience I knew young plants of cucumber can have temporary adaptation problems when planted on rockwool slabs.
This issue is hard to avoid: it even occurs when the young plants have been grown on rockwool, and are just being transplanted to rockwool slabs (in a greenhouse with favourable growing conditions).
– My know-how is an extension of the grower’s knowledge
I don’t pretend to know the expertise a grower already has.
But I like to be a sparring partner, to help others extend their knowledge, by filling blind spots, by finding the missing link, by exploring horizons, by handling plant technical problems they cannot solve themselves.
– The right analysis is in the eye of the beholder
In practice, making the right call depends on one’s ability to bridge theory and practice, careful observation with an eye for detail, critical thinking. And personal experience, things you will not read in a book. Small variations within or between plants, can provide additional clues to confirm or refute a thesis.
– One’s reputation is beyond price
I value integrity and entrepreneurial spirits. Especially when a start-up is in a crucial phase. I never disclosed or shared my research with anyone (in 20 years). In today’s world, that’s a rarity. Emphasis intended.
Green Fingers

Education

Born in 1973, I took an early interest in plants. I grew up with horticulture near the ‘City of Glass’ Westland, west of Delft, where my parents ran a greenhouse nursery with tropical vegetables. I developed a broad passion for plants, their variation, growth & development, practical use etc. In my spare time you could always find me in the greenhouse, growing plants and doing experiments. Though my father grew veggies, personally I always favoured ornamental plants, particularly tropical orchids, bulbs, gingers and anything peculiar.
During my studies Dutch Glasshouse Horticulture at Agricultural College Delft I increased my network among horticultural production companies in the Westland nearby. After that I specialized in Plant Breeding at Wageningen University, where I deepened my scientific knowledge base. My dual studies resulted in affinity with both science and practice.
During my career I pursued a part-time studies in the field of Information Management & Services at The Hague University. Besides that I joined various courses on webdesign, social media and Work 2.0.
In summary my knowledge about plants and the internet complements the knowledge that growers have.
Career

People, Planet, Profit

I worked for several companies in the Dutch planting material reproduction sector in floriculture. Primarily in classical plant breeding and micropropagation (plant tissue culture), both R&D and production. In plant breeding I have worked with both seed propagated plants and vegetatively propagated plants. I have worked in all major Dutch agricultural centres: Westland, Wageningen, Aalsmeer and Enkhuizen. The crop range I have worked with includes vegetables, houseplants, cut flowers, garden plants and bulbs & tubers.
After a career in the horticultural chain I started Agro Internet with a companion. Agro Internet offers online services to SME’s in horticulture and agriculture. Services include building a website, webdesign, social media management, coöperation online.
I want to work in a sustainable, responsible way.
And am eager to meet like-minded people around the globe.
I am eager to share my know-how.
For both SME’s and non-profit organizations.
My plant know-how has wide applications in:
horticulture
biobased business (BBE)
agricultural development work
‘green cities’
