Magnolia acuminata

Overview

Cucumber Tree. Ancestor of all yellow flowering Magnolias. Deciduous fast growing tree. Small, cup-shaped, yellow flowers (<9 cm). Late flowering (May, June), simultaneous with the leaves. Flowers lightly fragrant. After blooming few seed pods develop, that resemble little cucumbers. Coral red seeds. Large, shiny green oval leaves (10-20 cm), sometimes with a blue shine. Autumn colour yellow to oranjge. You are advised to replant Magnolia acuminata with the root ball (the entire root system). In literature some sources note M. acuminata does not tolerate chalky soils, however other sources contradict this. M. acminata originates from Canada and South-East America. A fast growing tree. In nature M. acuminata first grows as a shrub, gradually developing into a multi-stemmed tree. At young age the tree crown has a conical shape, but as the tree gets older branches start sagging and a broad tree crown develops. Suitable for parks and plantations. First generation hybrids with M. acuminata are often flowering precocious in the season and don't always bear yellow flowers. Native to North America. M. acuminata was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1759. Preferes slightly acidic soil. Seeds require vernalization for germination.
