Magnolia kobus

Overview

The most famous species among Magnolia trees. Deciduous, single-stemmed tree or multi-stemmed shrub from Japan. Broadly conical canopy. Silvery and velvety flower buds. Large, pristine white flowers (10 cm). Profusely flowering before the leaves appear, from early-April to early May. Poorly flowering at young age, yet profusely flowering at older age (10-15 years onwards). Late night frost can damage flowers. Green obovate leaves (8-15 cm). Forms a pyramidal tree crown at young age, but on older trees branches tend to droop and sag, resulting in a wide ovoid tree crown. After flowering dark red seedpods appear with pinkish red seeds. Autumn colour pale yellow/brown. Tolerates chalky coils. Well wind resistant. Suitable for any soil, except alkaline soils. Suitable as a street tree and parkland tree. Fleshy root system, both superficial and deep rooting. Magnolia kobus is best propagated by cuttings, as seedlings show considerable variation in floriferousness and the juvenile period (non-flowering age). In The Netherlands Magnolia kobus does not set seed. Diploid species (2n=38).
