Magnolia officinalis
Overview
Deciduous tree. Large leaves (20-40 cm long). Late flowering (May, June). White, firm, cup-shaped flowers. Fragrant. Large leaves have a tropical charisma. M. officinalis is almost identical to (possibly a subspecies of) M. obovata, which only differs at the leaf base. Magnolia officinalis has 2 varieties: var officinalis and var biloba. The highly aromatic bark is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Magnolia officinalis was first described by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson in 1913.
