Magnolia sargentiana

Overview

Flowers are among the largest of Magnolia. Large deciduous tree with broad conical canopy. Native to forests in China. Flowering in early spring (April, May) with pink to pale purple flowers. Leathery, dark green glossy leaves. In nature threatened by habitat destruction. Magnolia sargentiana was first described by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson in 1913. Uncommon in cultivation, despite large flower size, attractive foliage and good shape.
