F1 hybrid

A hybrid plant that decends from crossing two homozygous (inbred) lines. Commercial F1 hybrids express the heterosis effect, are genetically uniform and display uniform growth. To select an outperforming F1 hybrid cultivar, many F1 hybrids are tested in field trials.
Synonym: single-cross hybrid.
RT: inbred line

Hybrid variety

Cultivar obtained by intentionally crossing two or more homozygous lines (for self-pollinators), or inbred lines (for cross pollinators). A hybrid variety excels in vigour (heterosis) and uniformity.
