Doubled haploid [DH]

A genotype, originating from a haploid plant, after chromosome doubling. Haploids are valuable genetic material as they enable a breeder to obtain fully homozygous plants instantly, by chromosome doubling. This makes repeated and time-consuming inbreeding of parent plants unnecessary. Doubled haploids are obtained artificially by a combination of plant breeding and plant tissue culture techniques.
Abbreviation: DH .
